Rebuilding Together is a nationwide non-profit organization that relies on volunteer relationships to provide critical home repairs that focus on improving health, safety, comfort, and energy efficiency for elderly, disabled, and low-income homeowners. Southland’s relationship with Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley began in 2013 and has since expanded to involve additional volunteers from Envise, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southland.
On April 22, 2017, the Northern California offices of Southland and Envise participated in Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley for the fifth consecutive year. This year’s project belonged to a homeowner who is battling stage IV stomach cancer while also being the primary caretaker of his 96-year-old mother.
At seven in the morning, 28 volunteers from Southland and Envise showed up, ready to work . The day began with Southland’s safety coordinator leading stretch and flex exercises to prevent any injuries, and ladder safety training to be utilized throughout the day. Southland’s team joined the homeowner’s family to paint the exterior of the house, as well as pull weeds and clear out trash from the backyard. Inside the house, the team installed a new dishwasher, garbage disposal, and toilet seat risers in both bathrooms. In the main bathroom, a new faucet was installed, and the drain was repaired. The team also repaired an electrical outlet and a fluorescent light in the kitchen and installed a transition piece from the kitchen to the family room. By three o’clock that afternoon, the team had completed the task list and cleaned up.
Over the past five years, Southland has donated a total of $58,500 to the organization and has changed the lives of all involved in this very rewarding event. The funds that are donated are raised primarily through an annual bowling tournament held by Southland’s Northern California office. Vendors are invited to sponsor lanes, and they can bowl with their favorite project manager, project engineer, sales representative or division executive leader. It is a fun night enjoyed by all, and it is such a humbling experience to help provide for these families year after year.
